Country: France, Burgundy, Appellation Hautes‑Côtes de Nuits
Grape Varieties: 100% Chardonnay

The “Le Mont” Blanc 2023 from Domaine Comte Armand originates from a small, elevated site above Prémeaux-Prissey, planted on limestone plateau soils that grant freshness and minerality. The vintage shows the estate’s ability to craft a white Burgundy with finesse, expressive fruit, and a precise terroir signature.

Ageing: The wine is matured partly in French oak (mostly one-year-old barrels) and partly in a tank.

Tasting Notes: On the nose, you’ll find floral and slightly exotic aromas—white flowers, ripe stone fruit (peach/apricot) and a whisper of oak spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, fresh and clean, with a rounded attack, good tension behind, and subtle oak integration. The finish is bright and mineral-flecked, making it lively and engaging.

Food Pairing: Excellent as an aperitif or enjoyed on its own. Pairs beautifully with white meats (e.g., roasted chicken), shellfish or prawns, lightly sauced fish (such as sole meunière), and mild to medium cheeses (for example, Comté).

Ageing: The wine is approachable young but offers some ageing potential—most sources suggest drinking from around 2025 through 2030.

THE GRAPE

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is the "Big Daddy" of white wine grapes and one of the most widely planted in the world. It is suited to a wide variety of soils, though it excels in soils with a high limestone content as found in Champagne, Chablis, and the Côte D`Or.

Burgundy is Chardonnay`s spiritual home and the best White Burgundies are dry, rich, honeyed wines with marvelous poise, elegance and balance. They are unquestionably the finest dry white wines in the world. Chardonnay plays a crucial role in the Champagne blend, providing structure and finesse, and is the sole grape in Blanc de Blancs.

It is quantitatively important in California and Australia, is widely planted in Chile and South Africa, and is the second most widely planted grape in New Zealand. In warm climates Chardonnay has a tendency to develop very high sugar levels during the final stages of ripening and this can occur at the expense of acidity. Late picking is a common problem and can result in blowsy and flabby wines that lack structure and definition.

Recently in the New World, we have seen a move towards more elegant, better- balanced and less oak-driven Chardonnays, and this is to be welcomed.
