Country: France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Auxey-Duresses (Village)
Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir

The Auxey-Duresses Rouge 2023 from Domaine Comte Armand originates from a 0.48-hectare south-facing parcel within the village appellation. The vines, averaging around 40 years old, are rooted in one of the most calcareous soils of the Côte de Beaune, containing up to 30% active limestone. This unique geology imparts a distinctive mineral precision and freshness to the wine. Only about 2,250 bottles are produced each year.

Ageing: Traditional fermentation followed by 18 months of maturation in 2- to 4-year-old oak barrels. No new oak is used, allowing the purity of fruit and terroir to shine through.

Tasting Notes: Aromas of red cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry mingle with floral and subtle earthy tones. The wine expresses both the richness of small red fruits and the chalky character of its limestone soils.

Palate: Medium-bodied, with lively acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. The fruit is vibrant and pure, supported by a delicate mineral backbone and refined structure.

Finish: Elegant and persistent, revealing notes of red currant and a stony freshness that reflects its calcareous terroir.

Food Pairing: Enjoy young for its expressive fruit, or cellar up to 10 years for added complexity. Ideal with grilled poultry, pork tenderloin, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses such as Comté.

THE GRAPE

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is probably the most frustrating, and at times infuriating, wine grape in the world. However when it is successful, it can produce some of the most sublime wines known to man. This thin-skinned grape which grows in small, tight bunches performs well on well-drained, deepish limestone based subsoils as are found on Burgundy`s Côte d`Or.

Pinot Noir is more susceptible than other varieties to over cropping - concentration and varietal character disappear rapidly if yields are excessive and yields as little as 25hl/ha are the norm for some climates of the Côte d`Or.

Because of the thinness of the skins, Pinot Noir wines are lighter in colour, body and tannins. However the best wines have grip, complexity and an intensity of fruit seldom found in wine from other grapes. Young Pinot Noir can smell almost sweet, redolent with freshly crushed raspberries, cherries and redcurrants. When mature, the best wines develop a sensuous, silky mouth feel with the fruit flavours deepening and gamey "sous-bois" nuances emerging.

The best examples are still found in Burgundy, although Pinot Noir`s key role in Champagne should not be forgotten. It is grown throughout the world with notable success in the Carneros and Russian River Valley districts of California, and the Martinborough and Central Otago regions of New Zealand.
