Grape Varieties: Gelber Traminer
One of the oldest European varieties, Traminer came to Austria in the Middle Ages from what is now northern Italy. Its skin varies in colour from pale yellow to red and can be found in small, specialized vineyard sites throughout the country. Notoriously demanding in the vineyard, Traminer yields low-acid wines that are intensely aromatic and extract-rich.

Winemaking Techniques: Hand harvested. 5 to 15 days in cask and stainless steel tank. 9 months on the lees.

EMMERICH KNOLL
Emmerich Knoll III, an exuberant spokesperson for the Wachau region, farms the family’s 15 hectares of land and crafts wines that clearly express the Unterloiben terroir where some of Austria’s most famous vineyards can be found. This family-run winery is a treasure that has been estate owned and operated for over three generations.  The majority of the Knoll’s vineyard plantings are dedicated to Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, but the family also farms small amounts of Rivaner, Gelber Traminer, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  A member of “Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus,” an association of Wachau winemakers who follow strict quality control rules, the Knoll Winery upholds stringent farming and winemaking standards that vintage after vintage propels their wines to the top of restaurant, collector and critic’s lists.  Knoll wines are easily recognized by their distinct label that depicts an ornate image of St. Urban, the patron saint of winemakers and vineyards. While in the Wachau, one can also dine at the family’s acclaimed, 400-year-old restaurant, Loibnerhof Familie Knoll.

The Grape
Gewürztraminer
Gewürztraminer is a high quality white grape which produces classic varietal wines in the Alsace region of France.

It is the second most widely planted grape in Alsace and the most widely planted in the Haut-Rhin where it is particularly well suited to the clay-rich soils found in the Vosges foothills. It is normally fermented dry and produces golden, medium to full-bodied wine with heady aromas of lychees, rose petals and white peaches.

It attains naturally high sugar levels far in excess of Riesling and this makes it ideal for sweet, late harvest wines. These can be unctuously sweet and luscious and the best can last for decades.

It is also planted in Germany, Austria and Alto Adige in Italy and to a lesser extent in Australia, New Zealand and California. Gerwürz means spice in German, although this pink-skinned grape tends to produce exotically perfumed rather than spice laden wines.
