The Grape
Xinomavro
Xinomavro is the principal red wine grape of the uplands of Naousa in the regional unit of Imathia, and around Amyntaio, in Macedonia, Greece.

It is an ancient variety with numerous clones. 3 of these produce small berries in small bunches that, if well handled, can create relatively fine-grained tannins, delicate aromas and bright pigmentation. These better clones are nowadays the basis of the best wines, whilst the other clones are often employed for increasingly attractive rosé wines.

The red wine made from Xinomavro in the Naousa region has become one of Greece`s most important and well-regarded wines. The Naousa Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) was established in 1971 and mandates the use of 100% Xinomavro grapes. Age well due to the wine`s high acidity and tannin content and sometimes are similar to wines made by Nebbiolo grapes that comparisons are made to Italy`s highly regarded Barolo.
