CH. LAGRANGE 2017
Coutry: France, Bordeuax, Saint Julien
Grape Varieties: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot
Average age of the vine: 39 years

Harvest: Grapes are handpicked into individual crates. A first selection is done by hand on whole bunches and a second one grape by grape with an optical camera.

Ageing: for 21 months. 50 % of new oak barrels Fining in barrel with fresh eggwhites. Final blending before bottling

The Vintage: 2017 was early and contrasted. The total rainfall is lower than the average for the last twenty years. The month of April was particularly dry. The cool nights culminated in severe frost on the 27th of April. Spring was warm with average rainfall. Flowering occurred early, quickly and in ideal conditions. The summer was warm and dry until September 8th. A tremendous work carried out to mark 250 000 vine stocks during colour change made the intraplot selection process easier at harvesttime.

Tasting Notes: Ruby colour with purple reflects. On the nose, some notes of black cherry, liquorice and blackcurrant appear. The mouthfeel is silky and unctuous with a lot of freshness. This vintage features an early drinkability. Tannins are soft and well-integrated. A really harmonious wine which reminds us of the style of 2012 and 2015 vintages. It embodies the elegance of Saint-Julien wines.

The Grape
Cab.Sauvignon Blend
Cabernet Sauvignon lends itself particularly well in blends with Merlot. This is actually the archetypal Bordeaux blend, though in different proportions in the sub-regions and sometimes topped up with Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot.

In the Médoc and Graves the percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend can range from 95% to as low as 40%. It is particularly suited to the dry, warm, free- draining, gravel-rich soils and is responsible for the redolent cassis characteristics as well as the depth of colour, tannic structure and pronounced acidity of Médoc wines. However 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines can be slightly hollow-tasting in the middle palate and Merlot with its generous, fleshy fruit flavours acts as a perfect foil by filling in this cavity.

In St-Emilion and Pomerol, the blends are Merlot dominated as Cabernet Sauvignon can struggle to ripen there - when it is included, it adds structure and body to the wine. Sassicaia is the most famous Bordeaux blend in Italy and has spawned many imitations, whereby the blend is now firmly established in the New World and particularly in California and Australia.
